Poodle Skirts for Little and Big Girls
One event at which I remember poodle skirt outfits being worn, was my family’s year 2000 new year’s eve party. All the families on my mother’s side were in town for a week long reunion. The clever event planners that my mother and aunts are, they decided that our theme for the party would be all the decades before the year 2000. Everyone was assigned a certain decade and had to come dressed in the appropriate time period costume. I recall one aunt and uncle who dressed in 50′s style. And one of my sisters dressed in a red poodle skirt and had the handkerchief in her hair, the white shirt and the whole deal. It was a great party. So if you ever need a party idea, you won’t go wrong with this.
One way that 50′s outfits can be worn year round is for girl’s play. My daughter’s friend showed her a Red poodle skirt they owned that had a little poodle on it. They have another one that is pink. My daughter giddily declares that the skirt flies up when you twirl in it. Her friends were in a dance class and may have worn it there. In any case, they regularly dress up in the skirts to dance and pretend.

From what I can tell by what people are looking for on the Internet, I would say that pink is the most popular color of poodle skirt, followed by red. What material are poodle skirts made of? They are made of heavy material. Poodle skirts today are usually made of 100% fine acrylic felt or non-woven quality felt. Back in the 50′s, who knows what they were made of? If they had felt back then, then that’s what they most likely made them with.
Does anyone still have original poodle skirts from the 1950s? That is one question I’d be interested to know the answer to.
