Why are tans seen as sexy?
I love it when i go on holiday to a hot country, as it means i can top up on my healthy brown tan! I was recently wondering though, why are tans seen as sexy? What makes people see tans as essential if wearing bikinis/skirts or whatever?
The long history of mate selection tan skin meant that the person spent time outside and active. Pale skin was associated with illness. I think in more modern times we associated tan skin with glamorous places like California, Italy, Mexico, and the Caribbean, so it becomes a sign that a person is well enough off to travel. It’s a fad. For a long time it was pallor that was sexy. And some people even strove to look consumptive.
