Modest Bathing Suits to Suit Your Style
Modest Bathing Suits are not what one associates nowadays with the Jacuzzi or other hot tubs, but when they first came out in the early postwar years Jacuzzis were advertised with demurely clad beauties and promoted as hydrotherapeutic aides, not the sensual or even sexually raunchy settings they have now become. For the history of other swimwear or Modest Swimwear, fashionable types have been created with different designs and colors to suit the people who love them the most. Even with the lifeguards style becomes a sense in swimwear so they can protect the people with style. For students of cultural history, it is fascinating to see how a product can be marketed one way initially only to find success in another category altogether. And while the Jacuzzi is still employed as a part of many a hydrotherapeutic regimen, it is vastly more often sold for reasons other than the purely medical.
Thus will one no longer find modest bathing suits in a Jacuzzi anymore, not only because fashions have changed, obviously, but also because the success of the Jacuzzi is due to its perceived aura of sensuality and even sexuality. But it was not always so, and only a confluence of happenstance has given it the connotations it now so willingly embraces. Thanks to its adoption by Hollywood celebrities during the Sixties – no great users of modest bathing suits, they – the Jacuzzi hot tub has become associated with the upscale and, thanks to Hollywood high jinks, the sexually raunchy.
Originally, however, modest bathing suits and the Jacuzzi went hand in hand, as no one imagined it as anything other than a medical aide. Indeed, it was invented by Candido Jacuzzi for his son Kenneth, who suffered from the chronic pain of rheumatoid arthritis from a very early age. Candido Jacuzzi and his brothers had already established the successful company by then, which first made a fortune building aircraft and aircraft parts as well as marine and agricultural machinery. Applying the firm’s expertise in hydraulic pumps, Candido Jacuzzi developed a submersible bathtub pump for his ailing son so that the boy would not have to suffer in-between his regular hospital visits for hydrotherapeutic treatment.
And thus a star was born. It was soon decided to market the invention, with portable Jacuzzis given away on one of television’s then most popular game shows. In under another twenty years, the Jacuzzi as we know it today took shape with the introduction of the company’s “Roman bathtub,” which incorporated water jets to improve the experience. Interestingly, for all its popularity the Jacuzzi was never responsible for the bulk of the company’s income, which came from water pumps, marine jets, and other such equipment (the aerospace market was abandoned fairly early on, despite a record of modest historic achievements, as a result of a crash that killed one founding brother).
